FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a service token and how does it differ from OAuth?

A service token (st_live_…) is a long-lived secret that lets automated pipelines call the MCP server without an interactive browser login. OAuth sessions are for interactive use with tools like Claude Desktop. Agent plans include both: one OAuth session for interactive access, plus one or five service tokens for production automation.

What is the MCP server, and how is it different from the REST API?

The MCP (Model Context Protocol) server lets AI tools like Claude and Cursor query company data directly as a tool call — you ask a question in natural language, the AI calls CompanyLens, and returns structured results. No code required. The REST API is for developers integrating company data into applications. Both access the same underlying data.

Can I subscribe to more than one track?

Yes. MCP, REST API, and Agent plans are independent subscriptions. A common combination is REST API Starter for your backend integration, MCP Pro for interactive research with Claude or Cursor, and an Agent plan for automated pipelines.

Do all plans include every jurisdiction?

All plans include entity profiles across all supported jurisdictions. Officer data is available where source registries provide it (UK, Ireland, Norway, Latvia, Czech Republic, and more). Beneficial ownership is deepest for UK Companies House. Charges & mortgages are live for UK (Companies House) on all plans.

What counts as one query?

Each REST API or Autocomplete API call is one REST query. Each MCP tool call is one MCP query. The two quotas are tracked independently — Both REST and MCP quotas reset monthly.

Can I upgrade or downgrade at any time?

Yes. Upgrades take effect immediately and charge the prorated difference. Downgrades apply at the next billing cycle.

Do I need a credit card for the free tier?

No. Sign up and start querying immediately. No card required for the Free API tier or the Free MCP tier.
